The Big Squeeze: Oilflow Solutions prepares for Terraflux heavy oil EOR pilot
By: Elsie Ross
Tucked away in a laboratory in an unprepossessing light industrial area in northeast Calgary, Oilflow Solutions Canada scientists are hard at work on what they believe is a game-changing technology for enhanced heavy oil recovery.
If they are successful, the patented Terraflux formulation could be more effective than a waterflood in increasing reservoir recovery rates, saving operators both time and money.
Using industry standard computer simulators, the scientists have been testing the product and performance in the lab, developing the reservoir physics to make it all work, says Phil Fletcher, the company's technical director.
While the product has yet to be field-tested, results from the initial simulations have been promising. "We have done a head-to-head comparison with a waterflood and we have used one with the Terraflux formulation and what we are seeing is a 20% increase in recovery but in a shorter time," he says.
"This is a case of more oil in less time with essentially less use of chemicals." And if an operator can produce the same amount of oil with less water, there also will be energy savings.

Oilflow Solutions receives additional funding through the Alberta Innovation Voucher Pilot Program
Oilflow Solutions is proud to receive funding for development of its upcoming Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) Terraflux technology from the Alberta Innovation Voucher Pilot Program.
Innovation vouchers help small technology and knowledge-driven businesses in Alberta get their ideas and products to market faster.
Companies can apply for vouchers worth up to $10,000 or $50,000 to use at Alberta's public and not-for-profit service providers for business and technology development services.
“We are extremely excited to be developing technology that increases heavy oil and bitumen production in the reservoir but also significantly reduces environmental impact,” says Dr. Jeff Forsyth, Oilflow Solutions’ Research and Development Manager.
“Clearly, it’s vital for our province to move forward with technologies that can help production of the oilsands in the short and long term.”
During the program’s pilot, preference was given to businesses in emerging growth sectors such as clean technology, health, bio-tech and ICT. Since the Alberta Innovation Voucher Pilot Program’s launch in 2008, the Government of Alberta through Alberta Advanced Education and Technology has awarded more than $10 million in vouchers to small companies across the province.

Oilflow Solutions Welcomes PennWest Energy Trust, Canadian Natural Resources (CNRL) and Husky Energy
With 2010 in full swing, Oilflow Solutions' polymer-based ProfluxTM technology will be an integral piece to ensuring the development of Alberta's heavy oil using more efficient and environmentally friendly methods.
"This is going to be an exciting year for us," says Oilflow Solutions Sales and Marketing Manager Patrick Pidgeon.
Pidgeon welcomes WellfluxTM clients such as PennWest Energy Trust, Canadian Natural Resources (CNRL) and Husky Energy who have seen oil production increases of up to 100% or more while using significantly less torque energy.
"We understand optimizing wells is a key factor in our clients' business and we've delivered on that. However, we also see the value in doing so in a manner that significantly reduces stress on the environment. We are committed to working with our clients on quantifying the effects the above mentioned energy reductions have on offsetting their carbon footprint."
New Staff and Vehicles Added to Oilflow Team
Oilflow Solutions is pleased to welcome new staff members to help facilitate what is shaping up to be a very busy 2010.
Our new team members include:
Steven Harpe - Field Operator Sid Kenyon - Senior Operator Terence Leung - Marketing Analyst Ryan Stasiuk - Field Superintendent (Lloydminster) Trent Whenham - Field Operator
In addition to our four new trucks, our continual expansion will support our commitment to our clients and staff.

'Oilflow Expands' - Oilflow Solutions continues to grow its team and its capabilities well toward the end of 2009 and gets ready for even more expansion in 2010. Our operational capabilities have been much improved by adding not only new team members but new operational equipment. A new Vice President of Sales and Marketing, along with his team, will be leading Oilflow's customer driven focus in 2010, focusing on our capability to deliver what we promise; to unlock more and more heavy oil. With his extensive experience in the upstream oil market and his knowledge of sales and marketing, Oilflow Solutions' future looks bright as we continue to develop and grow.
Not only have we taken on a new member of staff in our Sales and Marketing team, but we have added a new Field Services Manager (FSM) to our organization as well. Our new FSM will be a key resource in the delivery of our service to our clients and will bring his extensive experience in heavy oil operations to the table.
As our team grows, we will be acquiring more resources and equipment to help everyone do their jobs to the best of their ability. For that reason, Oilflow Solutions has just added a brand new 'Solids to Liquids' (S2L) trailer to our fleet. This trailer's expanded capacity in the deployment of our Proflux well solution means our capability to unlock more heavy oil has also been increased and we are able to continue to serve our clients with the most advanced technology available.
We are currently recruiting for a Field Sales Manager and an Applications Development Field Service Manager (more details about these positions can be found on our 'Careers' page) and will be looking to expand even further in the near future with the recruitment of additional Lead Operators and Field Technical Support staff to support a growing client base between Lloydminster and Peace River.
These additions and expansions only serve to support our ever-increasing commitment to our customers, our delivery of service and commitment to our people. As we move forward to the close of 2009 and the beginning of 2010, the future looks bright for Oilflow Solutions!

'The British (Companies) are Coming!' - Oilflow Solutions speaks to CityTV about the rising number of British Companies setting roots down in Canada and the positive impact Oilflow Solutions is having on the Oil and Gas industry: 'Reducing the cost of heavy oil production, increasing production rates and reducing the carbon footprint'.

And... Brad Gardiner, CEO of Prosper Petroleum, Calgary discusses how Proflux and Oilflow Solutions have helped to increase the value generated by the Kimiwan Oilfield located in the Peace River country of North Western Alberta, Canada:
'The Seal Lake pilots in 2007 showed that Proflux would reduce torque and allow increased oil rates. Following discussions with the Oilflow Technical team, and a fluid screening study carried out by their chemists, we chose to deploy the Proflux Technology on a 3 well trial. The results were outstanding with oil rates more than doubling; in addition we observed a reduction in the frequency of operator visits to well sites due to the improved pump run times."
